Voting time is here

ADVERTISEMENTS
Those are the lyrics of today's Election Song. (September's began, "Vote, vote, we love to vote.")

At a class dinner party, a friend made a pro-Obama comment that she thought one of our professors made a face at. She looked up his donation record and sure enough, he had maxed out to McCain. "But I liked him!" she gasped. "I don't know if I can face him in class tomorrow. How can he support McCain? He's evil!" She was less than half joking, I think.

I am pretty moderate, except on social issues, and I don't think Republicans are evil. In general, I think there are merits to most candidates, and I can see both sides of most issues.

But sometimes an issue is completely one-sided because people only support it out of their own self-interest, even though it causes immense damage. Question 1 here in Massachusetts proposes doing away with the state income tax.

We got a voter guide in the mail with pro and con positions for each question. The pro position assured voters that their local and property taxes wouldn't go up, and there would be no cuts in important government services, we'd all just pay less.

GET REAL. You want your roads fixed, the snow plowed, your kid's teachers paid, police officers in your community, criminals put in jail, and elections run? Where do you think that money comes from?

Massachusetts state income tax is 5.3%, 23rd in the country. "Taxachusetts" is a myth. So suck it up and pay your taxes, people. NO ON 1.
