Read News: Proposition 5: The Most Threatening (to the Prison Industrial Complex)

By The Sentencing Project

ADVERTISEMENTS
California’s Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act, known as Proposition 5 on the state’s upcoming election ballot, is an effort to reduce prison sentences and provide drug rehabilitation to offenders in need of assistance. According to an L.A. Weekly opinion editorial, similar legislation, Proposition 36, proved beneficial with successful drug treatments and $2 billion in jail costsavings. In favor of the proposition, the opinion editorial stated that the prison industry does not support such legislation because “any reduction in prisoner intake threatens to shrink prison budgets, slow prison-guard salary increases and halt prison-staff job expansion.” Posted Date:10/30/2008 4:59:26 PM
