Clothes horse

"What clothes should we wear today?" I said to K. "How about your blue sweatpants."

"No!" he said.

He has never shown the slightest interest in his clothes, except when they have pictures of dogs or fire trucks on them. Even then, he'd just as soon hug them or eat them as wear them.

So I held them up and said, "Here are the blue sweatpants," and started to pull them on. He wriggled away, saying, "No! No!"

Hmm. "Brown sweatpants?" "No!" "Jeans?" "Yeah!"

Jeans it was. I was surprised, but I figured he was just asserting himself rather than expressing an actual preference about what to wear.

But then this morning: "What clothes should we wear today?" "Jeans!"

To make sure I heard him right, I held up the brown sweatpants. "No! Jeans!"

Luckily he accepted denim overalls, which are a little too small for him, but the best I could do on laundry day.

I wonder if the sudden preference for jeans is because that's all he sees me wear? Even on days when I'm dressed up, I stop at home and change into jeans before going to pick him up. Maybe next year, he'll start insisting on suits every day.
