Chemerinsky slams judge for ridiculing pro bono work as anti-social

By Jason Siegel

ADVERTISEMENTS

Erwin Chemerinsky UC-Irvine School of Law dean Erwin Chemerinsky wrote in this week's NLJ that 2d U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals chief judge Dennis Jacobs "should be ashamed of himself."

In a speech earlier this month, Jacobs said "that much of what we call legal work for the public interest is essentially selfserving: Lawyers use public interest litigation to promote their own agendas, social and political--and (on a wider plane) to promote the power and the role of the legal profession itself.

Dennis Jacobs Chemerinsky writes in his opinion article that he fears "[Jacobs'] marks will provide the excuse for law firms to be less supportive of their attorneys doing volunteer legal work and the rationalization for lawyers doing less to help others."
