"Lawmakers scold prison officials for security breaches after cell phone controversy," is Mike Ward's report in today's Austin American-Statesman. State prison officials were publicly upbraided Tuesday by lawmakers who said that lax enforcement of contraband rules allowed Texas' highest-security prisoners to obtain cell phones. At an emergency hearing of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, Chairman John Whitmire demanded that officials start electronically jamming cell phone calls in prisons despite a federal law that prohibits the practice without permission from the Federal Communications Commission.
