South Dakota Law Enforcers Alert For Crime Surge Spurred By Poor Economy

Poverty and financial desperation </font></p> <p><font size="2">contribute to both petty crimes and serious corruption </font></p> <p><font size="2">such as identity theft, embezzlement and fraud. They </font></p> <p><font size="2">also can lead to an increase in suicides. Financial </font></p> <p><font size="2">and criminal justice experts say South Dakota will be </font></p> <p><font size="2">affected by the world's economic trouble and might </font></p> <p><font size="2">see spikes in certain crimes associated with a </font></p> <p><font size="2">recession.</font></p> <p><font size="2">The economy could increase pressure on law </font></p> <p><font size="2">enforcement and associated social services, </font></p> <p><font size="2">Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead said. 'We </font></p> <p><font size="2">could see increased foreclosures, more lockouts, </font></p> <p><font size="2">more civil judgments, more families without a place to </font></p> <p><font size="2">call home,' he said. 'When it personally affects </font></p> <p><font size="2">people, it can lead to depression, substance abuse, </font></p> <p><font size="2">marital stress, increased suicide attempts.
