While most of San Diego’s music scene is devoted to punk/emo/indie/alt “white dudes in dive bars” or “suburban kids with so much real genuine angst” type stuff, it seems a storm is brewing in another genre. Pop.
In a story circulating the internet, it seems that Beyonce Knowles has recorded a cover of San Diego singer BC Jeans’ “If I Were A Boy”. There is a dispute brewing to how the rights to the song were acquired. Apparently BC Jean had no idea her song had been “sold” to Beyonce until a stranger called her to tell her. Shady shit. I sincerely hope that an equitable deal is worked out for all the parties involved. I’ve got no problem with one artist recording another artist’s song, but I think that attribution and compensation should certainly be dealt with. If this song turns into a Beyonce mega-hit, BC Jean should reap the rewards as well.
