The successful candidate will be responsible for drafting and managing global patent portfolios directed to inhalable drugs for the treatment of a variety of respiratory diseases, including asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition to working on all aspects of patent prosecution, including preparing responses and drafting patent applications, the selected individual will work closely with business and R&D colleagues to monitor the progress of Gilead?s in-house research, evaluate freedom to operate with respect to third party patent rights, and help evaluate potential in-licensing or acquisition opportunities.

This role will be the sole IP practitioner at Gilead?s Seattle site, and so the ability to work independently is essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft patent applications; responses to USPTO office actions; and instructions to foreign patent associates in response to office actions
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of products and technical developments
  • Conduct patentability studies and draft related assessments
  • Conduct freedom-to-operate reviews and draft related assessments
  • Review and assist in drafting IP-related agreements

Requirements:

  • A BA/BS degree in chemistry, or a chemistry-related subject such as medicinal chemistry
  • A Ph.D. in chemistry, or a chemistry-related subject, is preferred
  • Completion of the patent bar exam
  • Minimum 4 years of patent prosecution experience in the area of small molecule pharmaceuticals
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary, including the ability to fluently speak, write and understand English
  • Must be computer literate in MS Windows-based applications. The ability to conduct computer-based prior art searches, and patent family searches, is a plus
  • Availability to travel typically one trip per month, or once every two months, to Gilead?s main IP department in Foster City, California
