There's a time and a place for lying

ADVERTISEMENTS
One of the hassles of my line of work is being asked frequently to write tenure and promotion letters. This can be a slog even when the bottom line is clear (as it usually is - tenure in law schools is much closer to automatic than, say, in leading economics departments). But I feel that I should do it in order to be a good sport.

I thought I had only two letters to write this month, but just in the past two days I got two more.

Whence the lie. I responded to both that I'd be "delighted" to write the letters.

I could have honestly said that I am "delighted" to offer a favorable bottom line conclusion concerning the individuals at issue, since I truly am. But delighted to face more slog?

If anyone says I was lying about that, perhaps I will claim I was a POW and hence how dare you challenge my integrity.
