Education Reform: Governor Mitt Romney

By 3L at Seton Hall University School of Law and Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review.

ADVERTISEMENTS
Governor Mitt Romney's "conservative strategy to raise the bar in education" focuses on promoting school choice & increasing local control. He recognizes the importance, in particular, for students in failing schools to be able to exercise school choice to get "the resources and opportunities they need to succeed." He calls for a federal home schooling tax credit to help defray expenses of home schooling. He acknowledges the basic merits of NCLB, and advocates its improvement through added flexibility and focusing on individual student performance rather than overall progress of schools.

To attract and retain talented teachers, he advocates performance-based pay. The Governor calls for the expansion of charter schools, public-private partnerships, and a renewed emphasis on math and science.

Mr. Romney then cites to his accomplishments in Massachusetts: he increased the number of charter schools; established full tuition scholarships for the highest performing high school graduates to attend state universities; added 1,000 new math and science teachers; required math & science advanced placement courses; and provided laptops to all middle and high school students.
