This is how we do it

ADVERTISEMENTS
I get this all the time: "Wow, a baby and law school! How do you do it?"

It surprises me when it comes from female attorneys, you know, people with actual jobs. I remind them that during law school you're only expected to be somewhere about three hours a day, and even then it's not the end of the world if you don't show up.

When it comes from classmates, though, they usually have trouble believing that we have about the same amount of non-academic time, we just choose to spend it in different ways. For instance, many of my classmates are probably out drinking right about now, while I just finished washing strawberry puke out of a tiny T-shirt. (Then again, maybe some of them will end their nights washing puke out of a slightly less tiny T-shirt.) Most 3Ls I know are not spending their weekends at the library. Maybe the real difference is that when I spend my Saturday chasing my kid around the playground, I'm not thinking about the reading I should be doing. That's one of the beautiful things about having kids: when you're with them, you never feel like you're wasting time.

I'm ready to be done with law school and start doing, instead of just learning; but the last few years have been so, I guess relaxed isn't the right word, because I've definitely been busy, but, maybe self-determined is more the word I'm looking for. It'll be sad to give that up.
