Wisconsin A.G. Lawsuit May "Disenfranchise Voters"

ADVERTISEMENTS

A lawsuit by Wisconsin’s Attorney General may result in “the disenfranchisement of Wisconsin citizens with a clear and legitimate right to vote,” according to the state’s Government Accountability Board Director Kevin Kennedy, who oversees Wisconsin’s elections. Attorney General Van Hollen sued the Board, demanding it cross-check voter records back to January 2006. The voter registration system came online on August 6, 2008, and the result of the lawsuit may be longer voting times in an election that is expected to have record turnout.

In another voting rights matter, the Brennan Center for Justice and the Advancement Project recently explained how Florida will begin “enforcing a law that penalizes voters if their names are misspelled in voter registration records and government databases.” ACS Blog has previously reported on other obstacles to voting.

ACS has launched  a "Resources on Student Voting" page, which provides links to an array useful information about student voting rights, including state-specific guidelines on early voting, absentee voting and voter registration. In addition, on Oct. 7th ACS will be hosting an event in Washington D.C. at American University's Washington College of Law on voter protection.  ACS law school chapters from across the country will be participating in this event as well.
