Real Clear Politics has McCain beating Hillary in several polls and at least competitive in the others. What about Romney? Clinton beats him by an average of 11.5 points.
So if I'm Hillary Clinton, and I like the idea of facing Romney instead of McCain, what should I do? Emphasize how awesome McCain is (in the eyes of a Democrat) a few days before the Republican primary.
"She and John McCain are very close," Clinton said. "They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history, and they're afraid they'd put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other."
Ok, pretty basic political strategy. It may not, of itself, change anything. But it shows just how calculating the Clintons are. One aspect of a successful complete breakfast of political campaigning.
And, sure enough, Romney's narrative is basically a perfect fit for this.
