: Slaw.caFederal Government Names Supreme Court Nominee
By Michel-Adrien Sheppard
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has nominated Nova Scotia Court of Appeal judge Thomas Cromwell to sit on the Supreme Court of Canada.
If appointed, he will fill the seat left vacant when Michel Bastarache retired earlier this year.
Justice Cromwell has worked here before. He was the executive legal officer to former Supreme Court chief justice Antonio Lamer.
And one of my bosses just told me that he loves law libraries.
Of course, the Prime Minister is expected to call a national election in 2 days, and today’s announcement effectively bypasses(?), ignores(?), sabotages(?) the work of the ad hoc parliamentary selection committee that was to create a list of potential nominees, and this is being released on a Friday afternoon, and, and, and …
All political pre-electoral silliness aside, Justice Cromwell is very highly regarded as a jurist.
