By Karl R. Keys, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS
AP reports: A plea agreement has been reached in a death-penalty case that may have led to the ouster of the former U.S. Attorney in Arizona. Jose Rios Rico pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder, drug and weapons charges in the February 2003 slaying of Angela Pinkerton. The plea deal assures the 51-year-old Rios Rico will not face death and had been in the works for more than a year. Former U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton said there was evidence that Pinkerton’s body was buried in a landfill west of Phoenix. Justice Department officials wouldn’t approve up to $1 million for the retrieval. In late 2006, Charlton and the top prosecutors of 8 other states were fired as part of a Justice Department purge.
