By Anne Skove, Esq.
You'd think that with the budget problems courts are seeing these days they would be thrilled to get any payment of fines and fees. But the Massillon Municipal Court was not happy to receive a traffic fine -- in pennies!
A man with two traffic violations is dead-set on paying his $243 fine in cents as a message to the court. His attempt to send the first installment of $50 in pennies cost him $14.31 in shipping charges. We're not clear on what his issues are, but he claims he is "tired [...] of getting treated like crap" by the court.
See Court Refuses Payment in Pennies, Akron Beacon Journal (August 23, 2008).
NOTE: New tag: Truth Is Stranger Than (Legal) Fiction! While we whole-heartedly agree with Dr. Seuss that "funny things are everywhere," one beloved reader suggested a special category just for the goofier things we come across. So here it is. Enjoy!
