Ohio Needs Mentors

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Yes there is a Mentor, Ohio, but volunteers for Ohio's Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program can be from anywhere in the state.

The program is described as "a voluntary program for new lawyers designed to help ease the transition from law school to law practice through an ongoing relationship with an experienced attorney." The program has operated since July, 2006. It is now permanent, per rule change, and hence subject to evaluation and analysis every three years.

To volunteer or to seek a mentor, contact Lori Keating at 614-387-9317, or e-mail keatingl@sconet.state.oh.us.

Why have such a program? Aside from the obvious benefits of networking, welcoming, informal assistance, and possible aversion of disaster, these programs help non-legacy lawyers. Remember in law school, there were two gorups of people: one whose parents were lawyers, one whose parents were not. The latter group may not have even known any lawyers personally. Thus, these programs even out the playing field just a little.

See Supreme Court Seeks Participants for Mentoring Program, Supreme Court of Ohio (August 12, 2008).
