SurvivingImagine our pleasant surprise when we received a used college textbook entitled Surviving and Thriving in the Law Office: What Every Paralegal Should Know by Richard Hughes, with a note to "turn to page 109".  There, under the heading of Web Research Exercise was the following:

"On the internet, go to http://www.paralegalgateway.com.  You will find useful articles about paralegal careers as well as a considerable amount of other information useful to paralegals.  Find what you consider a particularly good article that will assist you in becoming a successful paralegal.  Share the article with your class.  As your classmates share their articles, take note of any information that may be of use to you in your own career."

Wow!  We are actually required college reading and, more importantly, have reached one of our mission goals set over eight years ago.  Paralegals teaching paralegals.  Almost all of the articles featured on ParalegalGateway.com are written by paralegals for paralegals and we have always felt that the best way to learn how to do something is from the person who is actually performing the work on a daily basis.

Aside from the fact that we're featured in this publication, this really is a great book.  The author of this guide on paralegal career success brings to it a unique perspective as a former supervising attorney who now is a paralegal educator. This publication gives paralegals and those studying the profession an inside look at what law offices look for in their paralegal staff. Readers not only learn from the attorney/author, they also get first-hand advice from paralegals through the Paralegal Perspective feature. Readers will learn the answers to such questions as How do I know if the job is right for me? How important is salary? Once on the job, how do I make a positive impression? How can I produce high-quality work? and How can I advance professionally? A sample paralegal resume and cover letter with comments about their development round out this highly useful resource.  Obviously, we recommend it.
