Picking Biden Won't Help Obama Control His Environment

By Jeralyn

It may be that Sen. Barack Obama texts out his VP choice today. The pundits think it's Joe Biden. Clearly, I hope it's not.

But, what does Biden do for Obama? He gives McCain a wealth of tv commericals to use against him.

Can you just see them now? Biden, saying Obama wasn't ready to be President and the job is "not something that lends itself to on-the-job training."

Or this 20 year old Biden campaign commercial:[More...]

The White House isn't a place to learn how to deal with international crisis, the balance of power... the economic future of the next generation,'' the narrator of Biden's 1988 ad for the Democratic nomination said. "The president has got to know the territory.''

Or Biden, saying about Obama, he's "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean."

What fun they will have with the politics of change and bringing a new kind of change to Washington politics, when Biden's been in the U.S. Senate since Nixon was President.

Or with Obama's railing against lobbyists when Biden's ties to MBNA and the credit card companies are legendary.

The late Hunter S. Thompson always said that politics is the art of controlling your environment. If there's one thing a Biden pick will show us all, it's that Obama hasn't learned that lesson yet.

These weren't one time comments by Biden:

Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) Reaffirmed That Obama Was Not Ready To Be Commander In Chief. ABC's George Stephanopoulos: "You were asked is he ready. You said 'I think he can be ready, but right now I don't believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.'" Sen. Biden: "I think that I stand by the statement." (ABC's "This Week," 8/19/07)

Sen. Biden: "Having talking points on foreign policy doesn't get you there." ("Biden Lashes Out At Obama," ABC News' "Political Radar" Blog, blogs.abcnews.com, 8/2/07)

For all the change that Obama promised to bring to politics in Washington, how's Obama going to explain driving up with Joe Biden in his father's Oldsmobile?
