Two Roads to Obama's Veep

ADVERTISEMENTS
The campaign is leaking, quite intentionally, the names Biden, Bayh, Kaine, and Sebulius.

The question:

Are they playing it straight, or are the preparing for a massive surprrse?

Either they're playing it straight-up -- meaining Biden, Bayh, Kaine, or Sebelius -- or it's some kind of A-lister, someone for whom the elaborate staging of it all doesn't produce an anti-climax. That list is probably limited to Hillary, Gore, Kerry and Colin Powell, though I have real trouble imagining the latter two.

I have trouble imagining Kerry or Gore, both because they've turned into senior statesmen after losing their bids for the White House. They're not about to turn in some time as Obama's VP.

That leaves Powell, a Republican McCain donor, and Hillary.

I'm not saying I think it's Hillary. But at this point, she's the only really viable surprise pick. And "surprise pick" may be exactly what the Obama campaign is looking for.
