City sues Chicago School Bus Company for Fire Truck Accident

By Hurley, McKenna & Murtz

ADVERTISEMENTS

The city of Chicago has sued a company that operated a bus involved in collision with a fire truck that resulted in the death of a veteran firefighter. The dailyherald.com reports that the Chicago suit seeks more than $350,000 for damage to the fire truck, a light pole and other costs in connection to the March 2007 collision.

School bus driver Darlene Lewis allegedly hit a fire truck while it was on the way to responding to an emergency call. The suit alleges that the fire truck spun out of control after the school bus clipped the back of the fire truck. The Chicago Police Department cited the bus driver for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. She was also a named party in the lawsuit.

Traffic accidents involving large trucks or buses are the most serious accidents on the road. Many times, these collisions can result in serious bodily injury or even death, especially to the driver of the smaller vehicle. The law governing bus accidents is complex, and it is common for muncipalities and school districts to be parties to the lawsuit. In some instances though, the law may provide immunity from lawsuits to some entities.

If you or a loved one was injured by a bus or in a truck accident, it is important to seek legal advice immediately. Illinois law limits the amount of time an injuried party has to file a lawsuit against a negligent bus or truck driver. The lawfirm of Hurley McKenna & Mertz, P.C. has extensive experience representing clients injured or killed in car, bus and truck crashes. Please contact us for a consultation.
