: ACS BlogACS Executive Director Says Mukasey Offers Weak Response To DOJ Hiring Scandal
Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey’s comments regarding the politicization of hiring for career positions within the Department of Justice were “woefully inadequate” and “disheartening,” American Constitution Society Executive Director Lisa Brown said. Before the American Bar Association, Mukasey acknowledged the reports from the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility charging several top former Justice Department aides with using political criteria to hire career prosecutors and immigration judges. But Mukasey said no action would be taken against the former aides. According to Mukasey, “not every wrong, or even every violation of the law is a crime.” Brown said, “Rather than addressing the corruption of the hiring process and the harm that has been done to the Department, the Attorney General offers no substantive response.” Brown’s entire statement can be accessed here.
