Weinberg Questions Historic Perjury Conviction

ADVERTISEMENTS

After examining recently released transcripts from the grand jury’s investigation of Alger Hiss, the U.S. State Department official accused of spying for the Soviet Union, Robert L. Weinberg questions the legitimacy of a 1950 perjury conviction of Hiss. In an article for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Weinberg argues that “whether or not one believes Alger Hiss was in fact guilty of spying (an issue on which this article deliberately takes no position) — the allegedly false answers for which Hiss was indicted and convicted of perjury did not, as a matter of law, constitute perjury.” See entire article here. Weinberg is a retired founding partner of the Washington, D.C. law firm, Williams and Connolly.
