: Legal Pad | LAL.A. lawyer may face federal charges, claims they're for Bush bashing
By Jason Siegel
It looks like federal prosecutors will indict Los Angeles trial lawyer Pierce O'Donnell on criminal campaign finance charges, the L.A. Times reported.
A federal grand jury is looking into whether O'Donnell violated federal campaign laws when he asked law firm employees to donate to John Edwards' 2004 presidential campaign and then reimbursed those who did.
O'Donnell's lawyers told the Times that the prosecution may be politically motivated, due to his criticism of the Bush Administration.
To make their point, they presented prosecutors with over 20 illegal campaign contribution cases that were handled administratively by the Federal Elections Commission, despite involving more money and egregious conduct.
Michigan lawyer Geoffrey Fieger was acquitted of similar charges on June 2, with his defense lawyer claiming Fieger was a victim of partisan politics, the ABA Journal pointed out.
O'Donnell agreed to plead to a misdemeanor charge and pay a large fine, but prosecutors a guilty plea to a felony charge -- which would end O'Donnell's legal career.
