Increase in hate crimes against gay men and Latino people

The California Attorney General's recent report on hate crimes in the state show a 23% increase in San Diego County from 2005 to 2006, while a 0.7% decrease in hate crimes statewide.

Hate crimes against gay men also increased by 7.3 percent, with 206 offenses reported in 2006.

KPBS reported that hate crimes against Latino people increased by 16 percent in San Diego, matching statewide figures (LISTEN). There were 218 offenses reported in California in 2006. The number of hate crimes in San Diego County were decreasing from 2000 to 2005, KPBS reported.
