: Legal Pad | LAFour firms get $500,000 to undo pension deal with O.C. deputies
By Jason Siegel
Orange County has paid over $500,000 to four law firms to help invalidate their pension agreement with the sheriff's deputies, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The 2001 pension deal allows deputies to retire at 50 with $70,000 annual pension. The county supervisors are trying to undo the deal as they face a $2.3 billion pension shortfall. Supervisors will vote next week on whether to proceed.
Two of the firms, San Francisco's Orrick Herrington and Phoenix's Snell & Wilmer, told the Times that the county didn't have a case.
While Kirkland & Ellis has been paid $221,200, the most of the four firms representing the county, more than a quarter of that ($65,000) was for 235 hours of work by a first-year associate.
