House Debates the Drill Responsibly in Leased Lands (DRILL) Act

By Karina

ADVERTISEMENTS

Today, the House debated the Drill Responsibly in Leased Lands (DRILL) Act, a bill to promote the responsible domestic production of oil and natural gas, particularly in 20 million acres of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. Though the bill received strong majority support in a vote of 244 to 173, it failed to receive the two-thirds necessary to pass under suspension of the rules. 162 Republicans voted against the proposal, which would increase domestic production of oil and gas on federal lands onshore and offshore.

Watch video highlights of the debate:

Speaker Pelosi: “There are two oilmen in the White House, and four dollars per gallon at the pump. The President is sitting on 700 million barrels of oil that would bring down the price at the pump. Free our oil, Mr. President. Say ‘use it or lose it’ to our oil companies. End speculation that is driving up the price. Protect the American consumer, vote for the DRILL Act.”
Chairman Markey:“Two Oil Men + Two Terms = $4.00 a gallon gasoline.”
Rep. DeFazio:“The Republicans are saying now, “It’s the Democrats’ fault.” No. We’re living under the failure of the Republican oil industry’s energy policy. There’s actually 164,968,695 reasons why we’re living under that. That’s the amount of money the Republican party has received from the oil industry in the last 18 years. One hundred and sixty four million dollars in political contributions. That’s a pretty big motivation.”
Rep. Hodes:“Let us remember that we have two oilmen in the White House, and $4 dollar a gallon gas today. Let us remember that we have an energy policy that was made in secret by the Vice President, by the oil companies, for the oil companies, and of the oil companies, and today we are reaping the benefits of that secret energy policy on which we have been stonewalled time and time again.”
Rep. Perlmutter:“We’ve got 68 million acres that the oil and gas companies have under lease today that they could drill that they’re not drilling. That is 14 years of supply to the United States. But what we have instead is we have an addiction to foreign oil. We’ve got a picture here of the President and the King of Saudi Arabia. We have to break that addiction.”
