Mayer book gets newsy launch

The New Yorker's Jane Mayer is getting serious bounce for her new book of reporting on the Bush administration's legal tactics in the war on terror. The book, The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals , isn't due out until next week. But reporters have snagged prematurely released copies at bookstores to write news stories about various revelations they found: Scott Shane in Friday's New York Times and Joby Warrick in today's Washington Post. The Post is reviewing the book tomorrow. In that review, Boston University professor Andrew Bacevich writes:
Her achievement lies less in bringing new revelations to light than in weaving into a comprehensive narrative a story revealed elsewhere in bits and pieces.
Bacevich also calls it a "very fine book."
