Media Loves Some "Maverick"

By Alexa

ADVERTISEMENTS
While I was angsting about FISA, I didn't even notice that John McCain hit an all new-low in ignorance this week. And as Max Bergmann reports, there shouldn't even BE a McCain campaign after this disastrous week. 'Course, media didn't notice, either. Damn. They don't even pretend to report the news anymore.

Any one of these incidents and comments would dominate the news cycle if they came from the Obama campaign. Yet McCain barely gets a mention. The press like to see themselves as political referees - neutral observers that call them like they see em'.

But they want this to be a horse race and so all the calls right now are going one way. How else can you explain the furor last week over the Obama "refine" comment - which represented zero change in Obama's position on Iraq - and the "swift boat" mania over Wesley Clark's uncontroversial comments (psss... by the way McCain exploits his POW experience in just about every ad - yet he says he doesn't like to talk about it).

Haf mursy. You remember, mis amigos, how the media called John Kerry a "flip-flopper" until that meme became the narrative of his campaign? It's perfectly fine for McCain to change his McPosition every 5 minutes. That's the one thing you can set your clock by. The second thing? Media won't touch it.
Just this week . . . .

McCain called Social Security "an absolute disgrace." Wasn't no grammatical error, muchachos. Wasn't taken out of context.

John McCain called one of the most successful and popular government programs, which uses the tax revenues of current workers to support retirement benefits for the elderly "an absolute disgrace."

Now if Obama had said the same, who thinks the entire state of Florida wouldn't have gone loco?

McCain's Top Policy Advisor Calls Americans A "Bunch of Whiners" For Worry About Economy". Couldn't make this smack up if I tried. Economy sucks more every day but McCain says it's all psychological.

No need to get bitter about it. If you don't like paying $5 a gallon self-serve, or you think $5 for a gallon of milk must be from a golden cow, stop whining. Dr. McMaverick knows best!

McCain "joked" about killing Iranians.

And here's AP's lede...

Cindy McCain's jab to her husband's back came a second too late Tuesday to keep him from making a wisecrack about the health impact of Iran's main import from the United States: cigarettes.

Right, the news here is that McCain and his wife bantered playfully -- and that McCain made a "wisecrack" about cigarettes.

Um, AP, the joke was about killing Iranians. Asked about increased exports to Iran, mainly from cigarettes, McCain said: "Maybe that's a way of killing them." The joking about killing was the news here.

Not like the media acolytes are going to remember this.

Exit plan? What exit plan?

"Oh, Jefe! You're simply too much! So very witty, always amusing!"

Nevermind the McPositions. AP is going to keep right on lying to you, while McCain laughs your asses into World War Z.
