: novalawcitySenate Approves Telecom Amnesty, Expands Domestic Spying Powers
Today the U.S. Senate overwhelming voted 68 to 29 to grant retroactive amnesty to the telecoms that aided the Bush Administration for five-years in a secret program that entailed the warrantless wiretapping of Americans, and to expand the government's authority to sift through U.S. communications.
Niiice. To quote comedian Jerry Stiller: "I got a lot of problems with you people! And now, you're gonna hear about it."
If the FISA Amendments Act survives constitutional challenge, then dozens of anti-wiretapping lawsuits currently filed against the nation's telecoms are doomed. Judges in charge of these cases will be forced to dismiss them if the telecoms can prove the government asked them to help out. Is that you, Yossarian?
Hat tip to Ryan Singel at Wired News for keeping it real. Wish our elected officials could do the same. Ryan's full post is available here.
