Give up? A combination of #5 and #9. My PC at work did indeed give up the ghost last week, and the hard drive has not given up its secrets yet. As usual, my work-related files are backed up nicely, but all my personal files have been lost. Moreover, my bookmarks and settings are back at square one, Firefox and plug-ins are absent, a lot of software needs to be reinstalled — you get the idea.

And why can’t I just blog from home? Ask my service provider, whose "broadband" connection is a shared line that seemingly connects 50,000 file sharers who never sleep.

OK, enough bitching. I’ve obviously got things back up and running.
