Suicide is Still Painless

A roundup of skeptics about Samuel Israel's "suicide":

From Bloomberg:

"Samuel Israel, the convicted co- founder of bankrupt hedge fund firm Bayou Group LLC, was declared a fugitive by U.S. authorities who dismissed the possibility that he killed himself by jumping off a bridge.

Israel disappeared June 9 instead of reporting to a federal prison in Massachusetts to begin serving a 20-year sentence for his role in a $400 million fraud. Police found Israel's car on an upstate New York bridge spanning the Hudson River. Scrawled in dust on the windshield were the words ``suicide is painless.''

``Suicide has been ruled out,'' William Dundon, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, said today in an e-mail. Yusill Scribner, a spokeswoman for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia, declined to comment on why Israel's status was changed or whether the search for him is international in scope."

From the WSJ:

"Just where will Sam Israel III, the hedge-fund-CEO-turned-felon-turned-fugitive, land? Would Israel be too obvious? Might he turn up in Namibia?

One thing seems to be sure: We won't find him floating under the Bear Mountain Bridge. According to the WSJ, the feds have ruled out the possibility that Israel, the former CEO of defunct hedge-fund firm Bayou Management, took his own life last week when his 2006 GMC Envoy was found parked atop a bridge in Westchester -- about 90 minutes before Israel was to report to a federal prison in Massachusetts to serve a 20-year prison term. (Written in dust on the hood of the vehicle was "suicide is painless" -- the title of the theme song for the movie and television show "M*A*S*H.")"

And finally from Greg Newton's Naked Shorts:

"Show me the corpse!"
