Michigan Doublespeak Moves To Nebraska

ADVERTISEMENTS

In opposing the proposed initiative that would bar the state and its agencies from discriminating against or granting preferential treatment to individuals based on their race or ethnicity the University of Nebraska has said that ?admissions and hiring decisions are not based solely on race and that they instead try to recruit more minority candidates.?

Solely? Instead?

I don?t know of any critic of racial preference who has ever claimed that any admissions or employment decisions of any institution anywhere have ever been made solely on the basis of race. Each preferred person, in addition to being of the desired race or ethnicity, presumably must also be sentient, often even literate, often with at least minimal skill or experience in relevant areas.

Discrimination of the sort the University of Nebraska practices and supports occurs whenever some individuals are treated better and others worse because of their race or ethnicity. The Nebraska Civil Rights Initiative, if passed by the voters and then adhered to by the state, would put an end to all such discriminatory policies and practices.

No wonder the University, probably the leading offender in the state, opposes it.
