Living in Sin: No Marriage in Butte County, CA

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Like Kern and Merced Counties, Butte County, California, will also stop performing wedding ceremonies.

Nothing to do with the same-sex business coming down from the high court not at all...that's the Batsonesque reason given, anyway.

Just how costly are weddings? How necessary? Unlike other court functions, weddings can easily be conducted elsewhere. In fact, we would guess that most weddings do not take place in court. If the wedding industry has anything to say about it, this out-of-court trend will continue.

There is a surge, as Tom predicted, but at least one report makes it sound minimal (6 couples?).

See Butte County Halts Marriages Because of Budget Constraints, AP, Mercury News (June 10, 2008), and Public Gives Kern County Officials Plenty of Advice on Gay Marriage, Jose Gaspar, Bakersfield Now (June 11, 2008). The latter contains a handy link to the marriage protection ordinance.
