By The Sentencing Project
ADVERTISEMENTS
"I've always had hope something would happen with my case," said Willie Mays Aikens, former Kansas City Royals first baseman. Aikens is schedudled to be released from prison today after having requested a reduced sentenced under the newly enacted retroactive crack cocaine sentencing guidelines adopted by the U.S. Sentencing Commission in December. Aikens, the only player ever to hit two home runs in two games of the same World Series, was subjected to a mandatory minimum sentence of 248 months in prison due to the harsh sentencing penalties for using and dealing crack. His sentence for selling 2.2 ounces of crack cocaine was treated as though equivalent to selling 15 pounds of powder cocaine.
