Virginia Execution to Proceed

By standdown

ADVERTISEMENTS
At SCOTUS Blog, Lyle Denniston reports that the U.S. Supreme Court and the Virginia governor have refused to intervene in tonight's scheduled execution.  Denniston has, "No delay of Virginia execution."  The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports, "Kaine won't halt killer's execution." It will be the third execution of 2008; the 1,102nd in the nation since executions resumed in 1977.  Since the Supreme Court ruling in Baze v. Rees last month, the states of Georgia and Mississippi have each carried out one execution.  According to TDCJ, 12 executions are already scheduled in Texas for the remainder of 2008; the first, next week.  Earlier coverage of the Virginia case is here.
