: Legal Pad | LANo write-in campaign against six Latino judges
By Jason Siegel
A write-in campaign that targeted six Los Angeles Superior Court seats, because they were held by Latino men, has failed, the Metropolitan News-Enterprise reported.
The launch of the write-in campaign by Rev. Ronald Tan in Carson was reported by the Los Angeles Times in March. The campaign was prompted by Tan's desire for more conservative judges and a desire increase the presence of Filipinos on the bench, Tan told the Times. He sought Filipino background lawyers to run against the Latino background judges based on his belief that Latino judges are easier to beat than white judges. "As Filipinos, our names are almost the same as Hispanics, so that puts us on co-equal ground," Tan told the Times.
Now two months later, no nomination papers have been received for the races, a spokesperson for the county registrar-recorder's office told MetNews.
Tan was assisted in his campaign by William Johnson who is running for an open court seat against Superior Court Commissioner James Bianco, the Times reported.
