Education and Labor Hearing on ICE Workplace Raids

By Jesse Lee

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Education and Labor Subcommittee on Workforce Protections held a hearing today, “ICE Workplace Raids: Their Impact on U.S. Children, Families, and Communities.” Witnesses explored how immigration enforcement could be improved in order to protect children, most of whom are American citizens.

Subcommittee Chairwoman Lynn Woolsey said in her opening statement (pdf):

?Even though ICE put into place voluntary guidelines to ensure the humane treatment of people being detained when conducting raids, they are not being followed in a consistent fashion. As a result, we are still hearing heartbreaking stories of the impact on children. Unless ICE follows humanitarian procedures in conducting these raids, we are still left with traumatized children and communities.?

Simon Romo, Chief Counsel for New Mexico Child Protective Services testified:

Simon Romo: “The majority of children in New Mexico who have non-citizen parents were themselves born in the United States, and it is therefore likely that the majority of children affected by immigration enforcement operations are, in fact, U.S. citizens.”
