U.S. Senator Sandra Day O'Connor?

By AndrewHyman

ADVERTISEMENTS

Senator McCain ought to promise now to resign his Senate seat before the November 2008 presidential election, if he is nominated by the GOP. Otherwise, the Democratic Governor of Arizona will be able to appoint McCain's successor in the event that he is elected President. Arizona law does require that the appointed successor be from the same political party, but that would still leave plenty of room for the Democratic Governor of Arizona to select from many squishy Republicans, such as a former Supreme Court Justice for example.

According to press reports, some McCain staffers have already urged him to resign to show that he's fully committed to the presidential race. I'm not sure McCain should resign right away, but he ought to promise now that he will resign before the next election, if he is nominated by the GOP. That would give the people of Arizona an opportunity to choose his successor, instead of leaving it all up to the Democratic governor.

Hat Tip: Skippy1.

P.S. This is not a knock against McCain. Just a suggestion.
