Hillary Clinton is all but mathematically eliminated from the race at this point. Still she is trudging on (reminding me of how Mike Huckabee ended his campaign a few months ago).
While I have no particular problem with someone staying in the race for as long as they can loan themselves millions of dollars, there is one thing about Hillary’s latest statement that does bother me.
Clinton has pledged to stay in the race “until there is a nominee”. I don’t know if anyone has pointed out yet that if she were to bow out, there would suddenly be a nominee… Obama.
Despite that, I think that it’s important for Clinton to not withdraw under pressure from Democrats. No one wants to see their candidate “forced out”. I think it’s important for Clinton to end her candidacy on her own terms, whether that be after May 20, when the math is a clinch, or after May 31st when the Florida/Michigan debacle is resolved.
For the record, I believe that at least Florida should be sat and counted. Both candidates were on the ballot, and neither campaigned. Michigan…. I think they should be sat, but the delegates should either be awarded by formula, OR, the numbers should be halved, and Obama awarded the delegates from all options other than Clinton that were selected.
I think it’s important for Obama to very, very quickly start asking the delegates from Florida and Michigan to be counted, at least partially. After North Carolina, he appears to have an unassailable numerical advantage. Making the big tent bigger will only help him come November.
