FROM THE UPCOMING ISSUE  |  Law school's move opens door for exiting faculty
More than a dozen faculty members at troubled Ave Maria Law School have left either temporarily or permanently since the school announced a year-and-a-half ago it was moving to Florida. While not all the departures are directly related to the move, the vast majority are related to the law school's handling of the move and those who spoke out against it, according to several faculty members.

FROM THE UPCOMING ISSUE  |  6th Circuit OKs class action against student loan provider
The 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has ruled that loan provider Access Group breached its agreements to borrowers in a class action involving thousands of law school graduates. The May 2 ruling affirmed a district court summary judgment decision that found Access Group liable for charging borrowers additional interest and adding those amounts to the principal owed.

"Referring to the kickback issue at the heart of the federal government's case against Milberg Weiss as "a cancerous growth" and an "economic threat" that threatens American jobs, two high-ranking Republican Congressmen have called on House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., to set a hearing to investigate the pervasiveness of such unethical conduct among trial lawyers."

WEB-ONLY  |  Justice O'Connor hearing cases at the 1st Circuit
"Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is scheduled to hear cases at the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals for two days this week. Senior Circuit Judge Bruce M. Selya, who has been on senior status since Dec. 31, 2006, asked Justice O'Connor to help with the court's heavy caseload. The court is currently short one full-time judge. Eleven cases are scheduled for hearing during Justice O'Connor's time with the court on May 5 and May 6."

WEB-ONLY  |  Legal skirmish over tips for skycaps still in holding pattern
"American Airlines asked the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts to reverse a jury verdict that awarded nine Boston skycaps about $325,000 in a case involving the state's tips laws and banned tipping of its skycaps at Logan Airport. The plaintiffs' lawyer, meanwhile, has asked the court for treble damages and plans to file an injunction asking the judge to bar American from banning tips because such actions are a retaliation against the skycaps."

WEB-ONLY  |  Ill. high court rejects bid by media to open secret court proceedings in R. Kelly trial
"The Illinois Supreme Court rejected a request by Chicago media organizations that a state court be ordered to immediately make public certain secret court proceedings in the build-up to the criminal trial of rhythm and blues singer R. Kelly."
