Stephen Williams

Steve Williams is the most charismatic business lawyer in the country, according to a partner at Slaughter and May. He would say that: Williams, 60, started his career at Slaughters in 1972 and is now, as general counsel at Unilever, one of its biggest-spending clients. A graduate of King's College London, Williams spent 11 years in the legal department at ICI before joining Unilever in 1986. He has been general counsel of the consumer products giant since 1993. Outside the company, he sits on committees at the Law Society and the CBI and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He also sits on the board of Arriva, the bus operator, making him one of the few City lawyers to hold a non-executive role at a FTSE company.
