Starting to feel at home

ADVERTISEMENTS
I have been going to the gym!

My reading-on-the-treadmill strategy has worked out well so far. In fact, when I have reading to do, I WANT to go to the gym because it's more efficient than sitting on the couch -- I don't get drowsy and I'm not tempted to jump up every five minutes and check my email. And since the point is to do work and not to embark on an exercise routine, it doesn't seem as onerous. I even take notes sometimes, but then I have to hop off the elliptical every few minutes to search for the pen I dropped.

I've become less intimidated about the gym since I've been going more. Now if I feel paranoid that someone will notice my squashy abs, I fortify myself by thinking, I have a kid! A good side benefit of a kid is that he's an excuse for everything from lateness to squashy abs.

Today, when I walked in the locker room, the first thing I heard over the music system was, "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a... CAGE!" That put a smile on my face. Reminded me of shutting myself in my room as a teenager with the radio way up.
