Do Not Call Registry Now Permanent

By Michael Progar

ADVERTISEMENTS
On February 15, 2008, President Bush signed into law the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007. The Act provides that telephone numbers registered on the National Do Not Call Registry will not be removed from the registry unless they have been disconnected and reassigned, or are otherwise found to be invalid.

The registry accepts cell phone numbers, but does not allow the registration of fax or business telephone numbers. If your telephone number is disconnected and then reconnected, it may be necessary for you to re-register.

It is also possible for other changes to result in your number being removed from the list, such as changing the billing name on the account, or by changing service plans. You can verify whether your number is on the registry here.

Note that the registry does not prohibit calls from political organizations or charities, since they do not fall within the definition of "telemarketing." It also does not prohibit calls from companies with whom you have a recent business relationship. However, you may request that a specific company not call you and it is required to stop calling you, even if you have a business relationship with it.
