: Legal Pad | LAO.C. Judge James Brooks to retire over misconduct
By Jason Siegel
Orange County judge James Brooks is retiring rather than facing disciplinary proceedings, The Recorder reported.
Brooks, who joined the O.C. Superior Court a decade ago, accepted a public admonishment and agreed to permanently retire from the bench, as part of a deal with the Commission on Judicial Performance.
A unanimous order released yesterday by the commission outlined Brooks' long history of disciplinary run-ins over remarks he made to litigants and attorneys, some reflecting ethnic bias, as well as rulings that were overturned for an appearance of bias. They concluded in that the requirements of the deal "adequately protects the public from any future misconduct."
Brooks will leave on April 30 and then use about four months of vacation before officially retiring, a court spokeswoman told The Recorder.
