Japanese Health Drinks And Products Are Too Much For Me To Handle

By Chuck Newton

ADVERTISEMENTS

Look, I understand what you put into your body matters.  I understand that I put too much in my body, hence the weight problem.  And, I understand that Asians, most of which are skinny, have always had some inside knowledge that proceeds the knowledge base of Western medicine.  But, having a womb for desert is a little too much for me to take.

My daughter, Mary Newton, is into everything Japanese.  She speaks the language, she got herPlacenta_pa36 undergraduate degree in the language before going to law school.  She has worked in Japan.  And, as a result, she is braver than I am when it comes to Japanese particularities.  Heck, I do not even like Sushi unless it is possibly battered and deep fried.  But, this might even be too much for her -- I hope.

According to Slashfood, Japan is now marketing a line of health drinks and beauty products that contain a special secret ingredient.  And, I am not talking about something like McDonald's special BigMac sauce.  (Thousand Island dressing)  I am talking about Placenta -- AFTERBIRTH!

Apparently, there is historical precedent for eating a placenta, and it is chock full of nutrients and minerals, which are lost during childbirth. Women who ingest their placenta in some form after birth reportedly say they feel more upbeat and are less prone to post-partum depression.  Lots of mammals eat their placenta as well, but then I am not one of those animals.  And, they say that placenta is vegan in that although it is flesh, no creature had to die to procure it.

The more I think about it, the more squeamish I become.

Well, the Japanese company Nihon Sofuken is taking the acknowledged health properties of the placenta and turning them into a line of health and beauty products, including drinks, jellies and face masks.  So yes, you can smear it on your face as well.

Worse, not wanting to use human afterbirth, Nihon Sofuken uses pig placenta instead. To make it presentable the company has added a delicate peach flavoring.  So the health care product is not even Kosher.  Great.

I think I will pass on the sushi as well.
