FROM THE UPCOMING ISSUE | Federal judge strikes down USPTO rule changes WEB-ONLY | Suspension, fine recommended for Boston judge who sent improper letters to newspaper WEB-ONLY | Milberg's motion to dismiss money laundering count denied
"A federal court in Virginia on Tuesday issued a ruling declaring that sweeping U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rule changes published last August are invalid. The new rules were meant to speed up the processing of patents and clear the Patent Office's backlog of filings by limiting the number of patent claims on patent applications."
"The Massachusetts Commission on Judicial Conduct recommended a $25,000 fine, a 30-day suspension without pay and a public censure for state court Judge Ernest B. Murphy for sending improper letters to Boston Herald publisher Patrick J. Purcell that demanded settlement of Murphy's libel lawsuit against the newspaper. The panel concluded that Murphy's conduct was willful and that he attempted to both intimidate Purcell and persuade the Herald to pay him more than the courts had awarded him."
"A federal judge in Los Angeles has denied the law firm Milberg's motion to dismiss a money laundering count in the government's kickback case. Prosecutors allege that Milberg, which recently changed its name from Milberg Weiss, and seven of its partners obtained $250 million in attorney fees by paying illegal kickbacks to name plaintiffs."
