J&J Recalling 384,000 Insulin Pump Cartridges that Could Fail to Deliver Correct Dosages

By Paul Napoli

March 8, 2011

Leaking Insulin Pump Cartridges are under recall because the leak may interfere with its performance and create potentially life-threatening conditions.

Two reports of leaking insulin pumps have prompted Animas, part of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, to recall 384,000 Insulin Pump Cartridges delivered between November 30, 2010 and January 4, 2011. Animas has concluded that the pumps leak on the plunger side of the cartridge.

If the pump leaks, it may not deliver the required amount of insulin.

'Please note that under-delivery of insulin can cause high blood sugar and/or diabetic ketoacidosis,' Animas said in a press release. 'These are serious conditions that can cause severe health impact, including death. Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis may include nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath and excess thirst/urination.'

The recall affects the following cartridge lot numbers:

B201575

B201576

B201581

B201582

B201583

Consumers can match the recalled lot numbers by locating the lot number on the side of the box or the packaging accompanying the cartridge. Anyone with these potentially deadly cartridges should stop using them and replace with an alternative product. Animas expected to ship replacement cartridges to consumers in early March. Those who did not receive their replacement cartridges should call the Cartridge Fulfillment Center at 1-877-280-2339.
