: Legal Ethics ForumOf Conflicts of Interest and Full-Time Professors
All law schools that I'm aware of have some sort of limitation on outside work (consulting, lawyering) by full-time professors. In part, this is driven by ABA standards, and no doubt in part by past abuses. One thing that some schools have is a prohibition against any sort of continuous affiliation between a professor and a firm (e.g.., no professor can be "of counsel" to a firm). In part, that outright ban seems to be the result of an old ABA interpretation that, I think, has been eliminated, which basically interpreted a standard to mean that if a professor was of counsel, etc., then presumptively he was not full-time for purposes of reporting.
With all that out of the way, I know several professors who are partners in firms or of counsel to firms. What I am trying to understand is how pervasive the practice is? If your school allows this, will you either email me or post below (david at hricik.com works best). All information is just for me to become informed about current practices.
Muchas gracias!
