By Gerry Oginski
A new report shows that cancer rates in the United States have once again fallen.
This particular report has been released annually since 1998 and features collusion among a handful of government and non-governmental organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Cancer Society. This report covers figures through 2008.
The annual rate of new cancers has declined by half a percentage since 1999. The annual rate of death from cancers has dropped by 1.5% for adults and by 1.7% for children.
Better screening, advances in treatment, and behavior changes such as reductions in smoking are thought to have helped lower cancer rates. The rate of lung cancer among men has been falling since the 1990s and the rate among women fell in 2008 for the second consecutive year.
Prostate and colon cancer case rates and death rates have dropped as well. But while the breast cancer death rate has fallen, the rate of new cases has leveled off since 2004.
Skin cancer rates, however, have increased. This might be due to the increased use of tanning beds. A director from the CDC calls it a possible "future epidemic."
The authors of the study also pointed to the nation's increasing weight problem as a concerning risk factor for cancer.
